The Helper of Me

The are a various sundry of things that I would like to write to you about on this fine Autumn-ish evening, but one thing surpasses all the other things on my heart. I have to tell you that Jesus helps me. Every day. In all my moments.

Just last night, Brent and I weren’t getting along very well. And this morning when we woke up, it seemed like we still didn’t like each other. But we’ve started this new thing. With God’s help, we’ve been trying to read the Bible and pray together in the mornings.

Now, I must say, it’s awfully hard to pray with someone when you’re cross toward them. And it’s just as hard to read God’s Word when you know that it says in there to forgive others just like He forgave you…and you’re sitting there in your pride, holding a grudge.

But somehow, we mumbled a few feeble prayers for help just to want to love and to want to forgive and to want to do the right thing, and do you know what?

Jesus helped us. He always does that. And every time I’m amazed.

“For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.” (Philippians 2:13)

He’s just that kind of God– giving us the virtues that He commands.

And the other night I was scared out of my wits. I’m terrible about thinking about all the what-if’s in life and I can get so frightened and discouraged that all the beauty around me just fades right away and the world becomes doom and gloom.

To be quite honest, I just kind of freak out sometimes. And life feels really hard when you’re freakin’ out over things that haven’t even happened.

But Jesus…He hears all my thoughts and all my pleas for help and He helps me. He comforts me and tells me things like this:

“My grace is enough for you..” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

and

“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)

Then there are the myriad of moments throughout my day when I’m just trudging along, doing all the things that I feel I must do, just to keep my head above water. And in all those moments, I have to know that there is a God who is very near. A God who is big enough to take insignificant drudgery and turn it into something sacred. A God who cares about the little details of life, of my life, and who can keep me from wasting even one day.

“Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

“And whatever you do (no matter what is it) do everything in the Name of the Lord Jesus and in dependence upon His Person, giving praise to God the Father through Him.” (Colossians 3:17) Amplified Bible

It’s not just the hard things in life that Jesus helps me with. He helps me on all the glorious days. All the days that are filled with light. He helps me to see that it’s really Him that I’m admiring. All the beauty is just a glimpse of Him. The light flowing through those branches…this feeling deep in my chest are all from Him–His fingertips reaching out to me.

So, tonight I’m just simply praising Him for helping me. He’s the King of all the kings and the Lord of all the Lords…and yet He’s the helper of me. That’s an amazing thing. I just wanted to tell you that.

Thank you for listening.

“For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:36)
