When You Just Need Rest

You know what’s amazing about rest? When you’re resting, your face is all full of peace. Like, someone took a soft, warm washcloth and washed all the worry away. And all the stress. And all the trying-to-control.

And the thing is, everybody in the whole entire world has to rest. No matter if you’re a world leader or a millionaire, or just a common, ordinary fella without a penny to his name. At some point, we all have to relinquish control and quit striving and stop the stressing and just lay our heads down and get some sleep.

Every last one of us.

When you’re resting, you just get to relax and be restored. It’s such a good thing.

We could live all our wide-awake moments full of this calm serenity. Because God doesn’t get tired so He doesn’t need sleep, and He offers us His Presence to be our peace.

But, He won’t force it on us, so He says, “Come to Me.” If we want soul-rest, we’ve got to come. And come some more. And then come again. Because for some reason, it’s just in us to keep turning away and doing our own thing.

Our Maker knows how quickly we get weighed down by life, so He offers to do all this with us. And when we live life with Him, He carries the heavy loads. And whether you’re a world leader with lots of important stuff to do, or just a little babe with nothing else to do but eat and sleep– we could all use some peace. Some soul-rest especially when we’re wide awake.

I’m finding it here. But, I have to come. And come again and come some more. This keeping company with Jesus does bring the sweetest peace.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:28-30) (The Message)
